Eoin Flett Scott of Redland was born in June 1942, he submitted a petition for a matriculation of his arms based on a rubbing of heraldic arms on a stone from a mill which had fallen down on his property in Sanday, Orkney, said property having been in his family since before 1550.

The document with the rubbing was pinned to the wall in Lyon Office for two years before it was found to be in reverse exactly copied from a seal matrix by an illiterate stone mason carver. The arms were based on the stone at Redland and were matriculated, as this was not a grant, on the basis of ancient user. The stone also showed supporters which is why these were allowed. He would not have been given supporters without evidence of use prior to 1672 unless the land was a barony which had been held, and still was, by the same family since the late 16th century. The date of the matriculation was 11 Jan 1967.

The ancestor of Eoin Flett Scott of Redland was one David Walter Scott, who was a well known Border Reiver in the first quarter of the 16th century and who when he turned to raiding his neighbors also, was caught and tried in Edinburgh and convicted of cattle rustling, sheep stealing and sundry murders, but due to his influential connections perhaps, he was given the choice of having his head removed or exile. Choosing exile he sailed off in a small boat he thought to Holland but somehow went north instead and landed on the Isle of Sanday, Orkney, where only Norse was spoken, and stayed. Maybe he never knew he wasn’t in Holland…

Eoin Flett Scott of Redland died on 5 June 2013 at age 70.

The artwork is a rendering by John Hamilton Gaylor.
