Strathmore & Kinghorne 3
Arms blazon: Quarterly 1st and 4th Argent a lion rampant Azure, armed and langued Gules within a double tressure flory counterflory Azure ( for Lyon )
2nd and 3rd ermine three bows stringed palewise in fess Proper ( for Bowes)

Over all, an inescutcheon: Azure; a rose Argent barbed Vert and seeded Or,
ensigned with the imperial crown Proper within a double tressure flory counter flory Argent, the inescutcheon with an earl’s coronet Proper.

Claude George Bowes-Lyon, the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne
matriculated arms on 26 Dec 1938 including the above inescutcheon which was in fact a Royal Augmentation from King George VI to his father-in-law.

And was an allusion to the marriage of the then Duke of York to the Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923 and to the fact of her royal ancestry. King George VI had discussed the augmentation and its blazoning with the then Lord Lyon, Sir Francis Grant, before issuing the Royal Warrant to the Lord Lyon.

The 14th Earl’s ancestor Sir John Lyon had married Princess Johanna Stewart daughter of King Robert II in 1376 and so the blood descened down to the 14th Earl and his daughter, the Lady Elizabeth.

This augmentation is limited in descent to the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne alone but not to the cadet members of the Bowes-Lyon family.

We think it worth mentioning that Royal Augmentations of King George VI appear to be quite rare. We are only know of this one, one to the shield of Malta of the George Cross in 1943 and of course to Prince Philip. There may be others of course, but we are, as yet, aware of any.

We wish to thank John Hamilton Gaylor for illustrating the Strathmore and Kinghorne arms with the inescutcheon, thus bringing the augmentation to our attention, and to Elizabeth Roads, Snawdoun Herald, who filled me in with the background. The matriculation may be found in “Ordinary 2”, pp 43 #0602, 272 #04088 and 358 # 05216. We derived some biographical from several Wikipedia articles and Sir James Balfour Paul’s “The Scots Peerage” Vol. VIII, 1911, pp 262-317.

The artwork is a rendering of John Hamilton Gaylor.
