St. Jeanne d’Arc du Lis ( St. Joan of Arc)

Arms: Azure, a sword in pale point upwards Argent, hilted Or, its point enfiled by a coronet, all between two fleur-de-lis, Or.

SOURCE/NOTES & CREDITS:

Joan was born on the 6th of Jan 1412, led the French armies to victory over the English, captured, tried by the English and burned at the stake as a heretic on the 30th of May 1431. Not forgotten, Joan’s cause was pursued with persistence and she was Canonized as a Saint on the 16th of May 1920 by H.H. Pope Benedict XV.

Joan of Arc was granted nobility and arms in Letters Patent on 29 Dec 1429 by Charles VII of France. Nobilitation by Letters Patent was practically unknown at that date making them a signal if not unique honour. They were awarded with the name du Lys to Joan, her mother, her father, her brothers and all their posterity in both the male and female lines (a very rare concession in France), the family survived into the 17th century.

The artwork is a rendering by John Hamilton Gaylor.
