Bishop John Bernard Fitzpatrick

John Bernard Fitzpatrick was born on 1 November 1812 in Boston, MA, ordained on 13 June 1840 in Paris, France by Archbishop Bonomi, Superior of the Sulpicians, he engaged in pastoral work in the Diocese of Boston 1840-1843. He was appointed by Pope Gregory XVI to the titular See of Callipolis, 23 Nov 1843 and appointed Coadjutor bishop of Boston and consecrated 24 March 1844 in Georgetown, DC by Bishop Fenwick of Boston. He succeeded to the See of Boston on 11 August 1846. He died at age 54 on 13 Feb 1866 with 23 years as a Bhp and 19+ years as Bhp of Boston.

The See of Boston continued to have jurisdiction over MA, ME, NH until 1853 when at the request of Bhp Fitzpatrick the area comprising the states of NH and ME was erected as the Diocese of Portland in 1853 with Bhp Fitzpatrick serving as Administrator of the new diocese until 1855. dqw 20101117.
