John Inglis Drever Pottinger, LVO

Pottinger known as “Don” was born on 25 March 1919, served in WW2 from 1939 till 1946 ending as an Artillery Captain with the 6th Airborne Division. Postwar he became a portrait painter and is well known for his 1949 official portrait of Sir Thomas Innes of Learney as Lord Lyon King of Arms to be seen in the Lyon office to this day. But he is best known to us as the illustrator of “Simple Heraldry, Cheerfully Illustrated”, published in 1953. He was Appointed Falkland Pursuivant of Arms Extraordinary in 1953, Linlithgow Pursuivant of Arms Extraordinary in 1958, Unicorn Pursuivant in 1961 and Islay Herald in 1981. He was given the LVO on 31 December 1983. Latterly, he served as Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records in the Court of the Lord Lyon until his death on 14 June 1986.
