Marquess of Tweeddale in the Peerage of Scotland created: 17 Dec 1694 by William III of England who was also William II of Scotland.

Lineage: William de Hays about 1160 was cupbearer to Malcolm IV. He was the father of two sons: William, the ancestor of the Earl of Errol; and Robert, the ancestor, of the Marquess of Tweeddale. A common origin, however, may be assumed from the fact that in the entail of the lands and Lordship of Errol under the 1st Earl of Errol on 31 July 1452, David Hay of Yester and Edmund Hay of Talla appear in the remainder immediately after the Earl and then the cadets, then numerous of the Errol House.

John, 8th Lord Hay of Yester was on 1 Dec 1646 created Earl of Tweeddale with remainder to his heirs-male forever by King Charles I for his support of that king shortly thereafter resigning his lands and titles to his eldest son, dying in 1654.

His eldest son, John, the 2nd Earl of Tweeddale and 8th Lord Yester born in 1626 & educated at the University of Edinburgh did not betray King Charles I but succeeded in finding a middle path in the Cromwell years and joined to support King Charles II, then King James II and ultimately William II ( William III in England ) and was on 17 Dec 1694 created Marquess of Tweeddale, Earl of Gifford, Viscount Walden and Lord Hay of Yester for his support of William and Mary then King William. He died on 11 Aug 1697, age 71. He was considered one of the ablest, most honourable and straight-forward statesmen of his time. He was succeeded by his son John as the 2nd Marquess of Tweeddale.

The current holder is Charles David Montagu Hay, 14th Marquess of Tweeddale. His heir presumptive: The 1st marquess’ heirs male whatsoever.

The artwork is an interpretation of John Hamilton Gaylor.
