Fergusson of Kilkerran
Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran, 8th Baronet, FRSE, LLD, Chief of the Name and Arms of Fergusson & Chief of Clan Fergusson.

Arms: Azure a buckle Argent between three boars heads couped Or, in a dexter canton Argent a saltire Azure surmounted of an inescutcheon Or charged with a lion rampant within a double tressure flory counter flory Gules being the addition of Nova Scotia as a baronet. Sir James matriculated his arms on 11 Mar 1958, 42/153, page 45, No. 634, “An Ordinary of Arms”, Vol. II, Lion Office, Edinburgh, 1977.

Sir James who succeeded his father, General Sir Charles Fergusson of Kilkerran, 7th Bt. A distinguished soldier and Governor General of New Zealand 1924-1930, in February 1951 was born 18 Sep 1904, married Louise Frances Balfour Stratford Dugdale in 1930 and had issue including Sir Charles Fergusson, 9th Bt. his successor.

He was a journalist, then in WW2 a BBC broadcaster when he gave commentary on nazi propaganda. Later he became the official Keeper of the Records of Scotland from 1949 thru 1969. He was Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire 1969-1973. Sir James was a member of The Queen’s Bodyguard for Scotland, Royal Company of Archers. He was an author, historian, bookseller and publisher.

Some of his published works include: “Lowland Lairds”1949, “Argyll in the Forty-Five” 1951, “The Sixteen Peers of Scotland” 1960 and “The Declaration of Arbroath 1320, 1970…

Sir James died on 25 Oct 1973, and was buried in the family graveyard at Kilkerran, Maybole, Ayrshire.
