Almost 116 years ago George Arnulph Montgomerie, 15th Earl of Eglinton, 3rd Earl of Winton (1848–1919). received a matriculation from Lyon Court. The painting for the matriculation was done by Graham Johnston, Heraldic artist to Lyon Court. Johnston was appointed in 1898 by Lord Lyon Sir James Balfour Paul, KCVO and worked there until 1927.

The image is glorious and Graham Johnston was one of the verra best Heraldic Painters ever at Lyon Court. I might add due to his excellence he was in great demand in the first quarter of the 20th century. His work can be found for example in A. C. Fox-Davies’ “The Art of Heraldry” of 1904, & his “A complete Guide to Heraldry” of 1909, and in the volumes of “The “Scots Peerage” edited by Sir James Balfour Paul between 1904 and 1914, and in the two editions of “Scots Heraldry” of 1934 and 1956 by Sir Thomas Innes of Learney GCVO and so on.

The image of the Eglinton Achievement was brought to our attention by one of the Lyon Court pursuivants illustrating the use of dragons in Scots Heraldry.

The artwork is a rendition by Graham Johnston
