The Earldom of Erroll is one of the oldest earldoms in the Peerage of Scotland. The date of creation is circa. 12 June 1452 to him and his heirs male remaining a male fief until the time of Charles II

We are using Appendix A ( pp 156-158 ) “The Union Roll, 1707”found in the book “The Sixteen Peers of Scotland” by Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran, Bt. which indicates the Earl of Errol is the second senior Earl in the Peerage of Scotland.

The Current holder is Merlin Sereld Victor Gilbert Hay, 24th Earl of Erroll born in 1948, he is a Scottish nobleman. His parents were Diana Hay, 23rd Countess of Erroll and Sir Iain Moncreiffe of that Ilk, Bt. The Earl was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. His younger brother, Peregrine succeeded his father as chief of Clan Moncreiffe. The Earl succeeded to the peerage in 1978 as well as the baronetcy from his father. He is one of 90 excepted hereditary peers to remain in the House of Lords where he sits as a crossbencher.

He is the hereditary lord High Constable of Scotland and Chief of Clan Hay. The Earl is one of four peers entitled to appoint a private herald, who has the title of Slains Pursuivant of Arms, since 2016, John Malden.

He married in 1982 Isabelle Jacqueline Laline Hohler (1955-2020), daughter of Major Thomas Sidney Hohler and heiress to the family of Astell of Everton House, Bedfordshire. They have four children, two sons and two daughters. The heir apparent is Harry Thomas William Hay, Lord Hay born in 1984.
