31a. Strathcona's Last Spike
Sir Donald Smith, GCMG, Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal (1820-1914)

Sir Donald Smith, later Lord Strathcona, drives the last spike to make the Canadian Pacific Railway the first transcontinental railroad in Canada on 7 Nov 1885 in Craigellachie ( in the Canadian Rockies ) British Columbia. Sir Donald can be seen driving the last spike in the center of the photo. To his left & behind him is Sir Sandford Fleming, KCMG, a Canadian engineer and inventor. born and raised in Scotland, he emigrated to Canada at the age of 18, SSA member J. Sandford Fleming MacLean is related to and perhaps descended from him. And to his left William Cornelius Van Horne ( later Sir Wm. ), CPR General Manager ( Later CPR President ) and to Sir Donald's right is a teenager, Edward Mallandaine. See our entries for J.
