Boswell of Toberchurn
|
The 233rd Annual Mess Dinner of the Veteran Corps of Artillery (VCA) at Ft Hamilton, NY on January 14, 2023.
Colonel William Boswell of Toberchurn as a Major in the VCA (one of the eight Historic Military Commands recognized by Congress as pre-dating the Militia Act of 1792) and National Secretary of the Military Society of the War of 1812, wearing the VCA's Mess Dress uniform, which is a War of 1812 Artillery dress uniform.
Each of the original members of the VCA was a 'veteran' of the Revolutionary War' - thus the name. Their role was to protect NYC's harbor from invasion by sea; they first saw service during the War of 1812 and have been active ever since. The VCA has both Regular and Hereditary members; the latter are descendants of Revolutionary War veterans and include such luminaries as General of the Army Douglas MacArthur and General William Westmoreland. All new members - including the aforementioned generals - enter as Privates (E-1), regardless of their military grade.
