Michael de La Pole, 1st Earl of Suffolk, 1st Baron de La Pole born circa.1330 was according to Anya Seton was a loyal and trusted supporter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. However he was in reality a financier eventually appointed Chancellor of England by Richard II. Unfortunately, he was the first official in English history to be removed from office by the process of impeachment. He then fell afoul of the Lords Appellant in Nov 1387, but shrewdly fled to France. Remaining in exile he died there on 5 Sep 1389.
