Admiral Sir James Saumarez, 1st Bt., GCB, 1st Baron de Saumarez is considered one of the great British admirals of the Royal Navy in Napoleonic times. Born on 11 Mar 1757 at St. Peter's Port Guernsey the eldest son of Matthew de Sausmarez of an old island family and Carteret, daughter to James Marchant.

He had a distinguished naval career before he was made Rear Admiral of the Blue in 1801, and given the KB* & made a Baronet. In 1803 Parliament UK gave him an annunity of £1200 a year. When war broke out in 1803 he was given command of the Channel Fleet. So was not at Trafalgar. In 1808, he was given the Baltic Fleet with HMS Victory as his flagship. In 1812 he was on the spot in the Baltic to hamper French operations.

In 1814 upon the peace he was made Admiral, in 1819 Rear Adm of the UK, in 1821 Vice- Adm of the UK and from 1824-1827 C in C Plymouth. Am thinking he then retired and

On 15 Sep 1831 was raised to the peerage as Baron de Saumarez. He died in Guernsey, 9 Oct 1836, age 79.

Interestingly both the baronetcy and barony are extant today in Lord Eric Douglas Saumarez as the 7th Baron de Saumarez.

The artwork is an interpretation of John Hamilton Gaylor who indicated that the heraldry is nice being from an old pre-Napoleonic era family.

* Note: All Knights Companions of the Bath (KB) were in 1815 made Knights Grand Cross of the Bath (GCB) when the Order was reorganized with three classes as GCB, KCB and CB and with civil and military divisions.
