The last Lordship of Parliament in the Peerage of Scotland was created on 26 Dec 1690 for Sir Patrick Hume of Polwarth Bt. Born 13 Jan 1641with remainder to the Heirs male of his body and the heirs of said heirs. He was sometime Lord Chancellor of Scotland. On 23 Apr 1697 he was created Earl of Marchmont with remainder to his heirs male whatsoever. He died 1 Aug 1724.

Alexander Hume, 2nd son and 2nd Lord Polwarth and 2nd Earl of Marchmont was born 1 Jan 1675, succeeded his father on 1 Aug 1724 and was a Representative Peer for Scotland dying 27 Feb 1740.

Hugh Hume, the elder son born 15 Feb 1708, succeeded his father as 3rd Lord Polwarth and 3rd Earl Marchmont on 27 Feb 1740. He was sometime Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland and a Representative Peer for Scotland. His Lordship died 10 Jan 1794. The Earldom of Marchmont then became dormant. But the right to the Lordship of Polwarth devolved on his granddaughter. Succession to the Lordship of Polwarth has continued to this day.

The current holder is Andrew Walter Hepburne-Scott, 11th Lord Polwarth, born in 1947, his heir is the Hon. William Henry Hepburne-Scott, Master of Polwarth born in 1973 and his heir is his son Harry Walter Hepburn-Scott born in 2010. So, the succession to this peerage looks good.

Creation: Lord Polwarth, 26 December 1690

The lordship of Polwarth is listed in Appendix B, The Union Role of 1960. (Page 160, “The Sixteen Peers of Scotland”, Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran, Bt., 1960 )
