SHIELD: Sable two griffins passant within an orle of rope in two parts interlaced wavy of five fesswise Or.

Professor Gillian Black was appointed as Carrick Pursuivant on 1 August 2024. Previously Professor Black was Linlithgow Pursuivant Extraordinary

She is Professor of Scots Private Law at the University of Edinburgh and a Commissioner at the Scottish Law Commission. After qualifying as a solicitor in 2002, she became a lecturer at Edinburgh Law School in 2005. In 2009 Professor Black completed her PhD on “Publicity Rights in Scots Law”.

Professor Black is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and she remains on the non-practising roll of the Law Society of Scotland.

According to the Lyon Court Website Professor Black has a coat of arms pending.

The most recent previous holder of this office was Sheriff George Way of Plean.
