Erik Nikolai Järnefelt, nick-named Eero, was born on 8 November 1863 in Viborg, Finland, ( This city was captured, and has been kept to this day, by the Russians in 1944 ) to the Swedo-Finnish noble family of Järnefelt. In time he became one of Finland’s famous “realist” artists, an example of which is his painting of General Mannerheim as the Victor of Tampere in 1933, from which special copies were made for the Finnish Veterans of the 27th Jaeger Battalion and who died on 15 November 1937. We are fortunate to have one of the 27th Jaeger copies in our possession, the gift of the son of a 27th Jaeger. dqw 20090624
See also our entry under Mannerheim.
The artwork is a rendering by John Hamilton Gaylor.
