McKenna, Thomas
Arms: Parted per fess vert and sable a barrulet wavy between two lions’ faces in chief and an escallop in base Or.

SOURCE/NOTES & CREDITS: Image from Letters Patent used as background, text adapted from the Letters Patent and from a note from Liam Devlin, Esq., Rothesay Herald for which we thank him. We also wish to thank John H. Gaylor for his assistance with the blazon.

In 2007 we acquired a set of Letters Patent (LsP) for a Thomas McKenna from a farmer in Northumberland, dated 30 May 2000, a grant from Sir Malcolm Innes of Edingight, KCVO, These LsP are a deluxe set on a full page of Vellum with all the heralds & pursuivants arms from Lyon Court at the time plus floral decoration on the sides and the heavy Lyon Court wax seal in its brass case hanging from a red ribbon. The text also includes the “nobiliary clause” in use at that time. We are happy to say these Letters Patent hang framed on the wall of our library to this vera day.

Thomas McKenna, was born in Glasgow 10 Jan 1915 to one Thomas McKenna, a scientific Instrument Maker and Mary Scott, daughter of William Gemmell. In due course our Thomas became an electrician and worked in foreign lands such as Northern Rhodesia. He married twice and had two sons by the first wife and the third son, Alastair Graham McKenna, by his second wife, Marjorie, daughter of Edward Graham.

We know Thomas McKenna, the electrician, died before his son Alastair Graham McKenna petitioned Lyon Court for arms in memory of his father on 28 April 1999.

Alastair Graham McKenna then petitioned for arms for himself and got a matriculation for arms of his own in 2001, they are the arms shown here with a bordure Argent for himself as the third son.

The arms are a rendition of John Hamilton Gaylor.
