Grenville Signet Ring
An 85year old man,Tom Clark, with a brand-new state of the art metal detector discovered the pictured gold signet ring 10” beneath the grown in a field near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England.

The signet ring of solid 24 karat gold, was shiny & undamaged. Carved on the ring’s face with a coat of arms in reverse for stamping seals on letters and authenticating documents and inscribed with the owners name around the edge reading “Sigillum Georg de grenvil”.

This gentleman, George Grenville, turned out with research to be a Grenville, of Wotton Underwood and of Stowe in the county of Buckinghamshire.

The blazon being: Vert, on a cross argent five torteaux.

Grenville was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1763 through 1765. He was the Prime Minister who enacted the infamous Stamp Act
that enraged the citizens of the American Colonies.

The results were that Grenville was dismissed by George III in November 1765 and the Stamp Act was reversed in 1766. However the damage in the Colonies had been done and led to the American Revolution of 1775-1783.

The ring was recently auctioned and sparked a bidding war at London auctioneer's Noonans Mayfair, where it was acquired by a US collector with a winning bid of £9500 (US $12000+) The proceeds were split between Tom Clark and the current landowner.

SOURCE, NOTES & CREDITS: The text is adapted from the “Daily Mail” The image is from Noonans Mayfair. The blazon is from the Wikipedia article regarding George Grenville.
