BLAZON OF ARMS:
SHIELD: Quarterly, 1st and 4th: Gyronny of eight or and sable (Campbell); 2nd & 3rd: Argent, a lymphad or ancient galley sails furled flags and pennants flying gules and oars in action sable (Lorne).
SOURCE, NOTES & CREDITS: The illustration of arms for background is from the internet Wikipedia article. Text is adapted from the same source plus information from “The Scots Peerage”, vol. 1, pp. 317-393, edited by Sir James Balfour Paul, 1904, David Douglas, Edinburgh; and from our artist John Gaylor, to whom we give thanks, that the Dukes of Argyll, as dukes, had not matriculated arms until 2 May 1977 ( Ordinary III of the Public Register, page 168, edited by Dr. Bruce Durie, 2022 ), (Ian Campbell, the 12th Duke of Argyll, petitioned to matriculate his arms as Duke of Argyll. Then Sir James Monteith Grant, then Lord Lyon, had the Duke’s arms matriculated in the Public Register. However its only fair to mention that the Earl of Argyll’s arms were matriculated in c.1672 at the inception of the register. Things move slowly in the West Highlands! Additionally, it is to be noted the that the Wikipedia achievement for the Duke of Argyll, has the flags and pennants Gules. However, the registered blazon does not give flags Gules to the galleys of Lorne, so our artist has rendered the flags Sable. Wikipedia making the flags and pennants Gules is simply artistic license.
Archibald Campbell born on 25 July 1658, became the 10th Earl of Argyll, and was created 1st Duke of Argyll, with subsidiary titles, all with remainder to his heir-male whatever, on 23 June 1701 by King William for his very considerable support of William and Mary. His Grace died on 28 September 1703, age 45.
The Campbell family of peers played a major role in Scottish history throughout the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The Duke of Argyll also holds the hereditary titles of chief of Clan Campbell and Master of the Household of Scotland.
Since 2001, Torquhil Campbell has been the 13th Duke of Argyll.
The artwork is an interpretation of John Hamilton Gaylor
