Archibald Douglas, 1st Earl of Forfar (1653-1712 ) was the eldest son of the Earl of Angus by his second wife, Lady Jean Wemyss, born 3 May 1653 was created on 2 Oct 1661, Earl of Forfar, Lord Wandell and Hartsyde.
His father Archibald, Lord Douglas and Earl of Angus, born circa. 1609, was the eldest son of 1st Marquess of Douglas and 11th Earl of Angus. In 1651 Charles II created him Earl of Angus and Ormond, Lord Bothwell and Hartsyde with destination to his heirs male by his second wife, Lady Jean Wemyss. Archibald died 15 Jan 1655, predeceasing his father. However the patent for these titles never passed under the Great Seal due to the Cromwell troubles..
Back to the 1st Earl of Forfar : So with a new patent on 2 Oct 1661, King Charles created Archibald Douglas Earl of Forfar, Lord Wandell and Hartsyde with remander to heirs-male and with precedence from the date of the original patent of 1651. Forfar married Robina, daughter of Sir Wiliam Lockhart of Lee and they had issue, one son, Archibald Douglas. The 1st Earl of Forfar died on 23 Dec 1712 and was buried at Bothwell.
The 1st Earl was succeeded by his son, Archibald Douglas, 2nd Earl of Forfar (1692-1715 ) in 1712. The second Earl of Forfar was born on 25 May 1692 and known as Lord Wandell until he succeeded his father in 1712. This Earl was a career soldier, in 1713 He was appointed colonel of the 10th Regiment of Foot. In 1714 he was sent as an envoy to Prussia. In the Jacobite rising of of 1715 he held the rank of brigadier under the Duke of Argyll at the Battle of Sheriffmuir on 13 Nov 1715. He fought bravely with his regiment on the right wing of the royal army, was victorious but, gravely wounded, so severely that he lingered for only a few days after the battle, dying at Stirling on 3 Dec 1715 in his twenty-fourth year. He was buried near his father at Bothwell. He died unmarried so his estates reverted to the main line, represented by the Duke of Douglas, and his honours became extinct.
On 10 March 2019 Queen Elizabeth II gave her son Prince Edward for his 55th birthday the title of Earl of Forfar, 2nd creation as a Scottish title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.
