Anthony Richard Wagner born 6 September 1908 was one of the great heralds of England in the 20th Century. He was appointed Portcullis Pursuivant 1931, promoted to Richmond Herald in 1943 and Garter King of Arms in 1961. Upon reaching the age of 70 in 1978 he resigned and was appointed Clarenceux King of Arms which he retained for life. He led the coronation procession of George VI and had charge of the state funeral of Sir Winston Churchill and of the investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales at Caernarvon. He established the College of Arms Trust to fund the building’s maintenance. His books helped to revive the scholarly reputation of the College such as “Historic Heraldry”, 1939 and “Heralds and Heraldry in England”, 1939 and his “Heralds in England”, 1967.
He was general editor of the Antiquaries’ “Aspilogia” series and his own “ Catalogue of English Medieval Rolls of Arms., vol. 1, etc. He published when Clarenceux, “The Wagners of Brighton”, 1983 and “A Herald’s World”, 1988, and belonged to many societies and clubs, amongst which were the Society of Dilettanti and the Roxburghe Club. He died on 5 May 1995.
