Spellman
Blazon: Sable a fess Ermine debruised by a bend Or gutty de sang; on a chief Gules a cross Argent

SOURCES, NOTES & CREDITS: The illustration for background was supplied by the Wikipedia internet article. The biographic information is from various internet sources such as the Catholic Hierarchy.org. and the Wikipedia article about him. It is to be noted that the chief in his arms is that of a Bailiff of the Order of Malta as was pointed out to me by my friend Robert LaRocca for which we thank him.

Francis Cardinal Joseph Spellman born on 4 may 1889 in Whitman, MA, was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He was ordained a priest of Boston on 14 May 1916 and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Boston & consecrated by Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli ( later Pope Pius XII) on 8 Sep 1932. He served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston from 1932 to 1939. From 1939 to his death, he served as the sixth Archbishop of New York. He was created a cardinal in 1946 by Pope Pius XII. Spellman died in New York City on December 2, 1967, at age 78.

The reason for including the late Cardinal’s arms is his specific approval with his Imprimatur of “True Devotion to Mary with Preparation for Total Consecration” by St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort in 1949 and the “Manual of the Purgatorian Society” in 1946.

The artwork is an interpretation of John Hamilton Gaylor.
