Rear Admiral Christopher Hope Layman, CB, DSO, LVO born in 1938 the son of
the late Captain H. F. H. Layman, DSO, RN and Elizabeth Hughes he became a career naval officer. In 1964 RADM Layman married Katharine Romer Ascherson.

He was appointed by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1997 as the 13th Gentleman Usher of the Green Rod to the Order of the Thistle. RADM Laymen petitioned for and was granted arms by the Lord Lyon in Dec 2017.

Our artist was kind enough to place the staffs of his office behind RADM Layman’s shield in contrast to the embedded staffs in the shield of the first Green Rod, Sir Thomas Brand.

The artwork is a rendering by John Hamilton Gaylor.
