Birthbrief
|
We have here an image of the Letters Patent of the Birthbrief of Robert Murel Clark, Jr. issued under the hand of Sir Malcolm Innes of Edingight, KCVO, Lyon, 12 March 1997. This is the newest example of a birthbrief we have seen to date.
Birthbrieves are obtained by petition to the Lord Lyon for the purpose of setting forth the descent, nobiliary status and all such matters relating to the social, feudal, or tribal position of the petitioner as may seem useful at home or abroad, in nobiliary circles or public life, etc.
Letters Patent for Birthbrieves are issued ministerially and thus a conclusive writ of the Sovereign’s Lieutenant in nobilitas and outwith the control of any Court.
Birthbrieves are recorded in the Public Register of All Genealogies and Birthbrieves in Scotland.
More information regarding birthbrieves may be found in Sir Thomas Innes of Learney’s “Scots Heraldry” of 1956, pp 193-195
