Sir James Monteith Grant, KCVO, WS, FSA Scot. was born on 19 October 1903, educated at Edinburgh Academy and the University of Edinburgh. He was appointed a Writer to the Signet in 1927 and as Carrick Pursuivant in 1946. In 1957 he was appointed Marchmont Herald. In 1969 He was appointed Lord Lyon King of Arms and a KCVO. In 1970 Lyon Grant became a Knight of St. John in the British Realm and became Secretary of the Order of the Thistle in 1971. In March 1972 Sir James approved the publishing of a second roll of arms in the form of an ordinary with David Reid of Robertland, Carrick Pursuivant as editor with the assistance of Miss Vivien Wilson of the Lyon Office. Reid died midstream the book being completed in 1976 by Miss Wilson. Lyon Grant wrote the Foreword to the book and it was put out in 1977 in a limited edition of 800 copies.* In 1975 the King of Sweden made Sir James a Grand Officer of the Order of the North Star. Sir James retired in 1981 and was re-appointed as Marchmont Herald but died later in the year on 1 December 1981. dqw 20100312

And succeeded Sir Malcolm Innes of Edingight ( Lord Lyon 1981-2001 )
