Saint John Henry Newman, Cardinal Newman, was born 21 Feb 1801 in London, England, educated at Trinity College, Oxford, graduating with a BA in 1821. He was one of the outstanding religious figures in 19th century England, first in the Anglican Church, then in the Catholic Church.
On 13 Jun 1824 he was made an Anglican deacon and on 29 May 1825 ordained an Anglican priest. However on 9 Oct 1845 he converted to Catholicism and 20 months later on 30 May 1847 he was ordained a Catholic priest. Becoming an Oratorian he founded the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Birmingham. This became known as the Birmingham Oratory. Oratorians are not members of a religious order but secular priests who live in community spending their time in study and pastoral work. St. Philip Neri was his model as he greatly admired the saint for his gentleness and kindness.
He was appointed as rector of the Catholic University of Ireland (Now University College, Dublin ) in 1854 but resigned after three years in 1857 in frustration with the lack of cooperation of the Irish episcopacy, perhaps because he was an Englishman.
In 1878 The Duke of Norfolk and other Catholic English laymen recommended to Pope Leo XIII to make Newman a Cardinal, Leo XII asked Newman’s bishop, Bishop Ullathorne how he felt about this, Ullathorne responded that he would welcome the honour. On 12 May 1879 Leo XII made Newman a Cardinal.
Cardinal Newman lived the rest of his life at the Birmingham Oratory dying on 11 Aug 1890.
The cause for Cardinal Newman was opened in the late 1980s, in 1991 he was raised to the altars as a Venerable. After a miracle was investigated and confirmed he was Beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on 19 Sep 2010. Cardinal Newman was canonized and declared a Saint by HH Pope Francis 13 Oct 2019.
