2010-01 1st SSA outing of 2010
The Veteran Corps of Artillery, State of New York (VCA or VCASNY) was founded in 1790. Its members have participated in every war of the United States since including current involvements in Iraq and Afghanistan. Originally founded with the approval of then NY Governor De Witt Clinton to defend NYC harbor from our British cousins, today the VCA is one of eight Federally-recognized Historic Military Commands. Everyone, regardless of military grade, enters as a private. This has included such luminaries as General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, USA (PVT MacArthur, VCA) and General William Westmoreland, USA, of Vietnam fame (PVT Westmoreland, VCA), who once turned down a promotion to corporal, "Because I'm not sure that I can handle the additional responsibility."

The SSA in its first outing of 2010 had representation at the 200th Annual Dinner of the VCA. As the image indicates from Left to Right
SSA Member John A. Logan (1LT Logan, VCA)
SSA Newsletter Editor Dwyer Wedvick (LTC Wedvick, VCA)
SSA Chairman Colonel Wm. P. Boswell of Toberchurn (PVT Boswell, VCA)
Also present but not in this picture was SSA Member Dr. Charles C. Lucas, MD,
(VCA, COL & Commandant of the VCA.) He was too busy checking on things and mingling with guests for us to catch him then. We hope to get his picture for uploading within a few days.

The Military Social affair was held in India House, 1 Hanover Sq., NYC, an early 19th century building, filled with marine artifacts and ships models pre-dating the 20th century. 110 sat down to dinner to the music of Scottish pipes and drums skirling … love that sound! Across the table from us sat Mr. John Shannon, one of New York City’s leading heraldists, Executive Director of the St. George Society, Sassenach Armiger, Commander in the Venerable Order, and enjoyable table companion. A wonderful sparkling evening. dqw 20100117
