Historical arms of the Counts of Artois, the first of whom was Robert I of Artois,1216-1250, younger brother of Saint Louis King of France, Robert received this county and its arms from his father, Louis VIII as an appanage. The arms and county continued to descend through certain members of this family of French royal cousins. See Artois 2 for more information.
