The Viscount of Falkland, the Premier Viscount in the Peerage of Scotland, has royal ancestry we believe is of interest:
Genealogy from Edward III to Sir Henry Cary, 1st Viscount of Falkland
Edward III (Plantagenet) King of England 1312-1377 married Philippa of Hainault 1314-1369
Their 3rd surviving son, John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster 1340-1399 married thirdly, Katherine de Roet, Lady Swynford 1350-1403
( See the entries for John of Gaunt and Katherine, Duchess of Lancaster in the Hundred Years War Album for the details of their relationship and the entries for John Beaufort)
Their eldest son, John Beaufort, Earl of Somerset 1372-1410 married Margaret Holland 1385-1439
John Beaufort’s fourth son Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset 1406-1455 married Eleanor Beauchamp 1408-1467
Their daughter Eleanor Beaufort 1431-1501 married Sir Robert Spencer of Spencercombe 1430-1509 (Eleanor Beaufort was sister to Henry B., 3rd D. of Somerset and to the 4th Duke of Somerset, she was also daughter & co-heir to her father, Edmund Beaufort )
Sir Robert Spencer’s daughter, Margaret Spencer, 1472-1536 married circa. 1490 Thomas Cary of Chilton Foliot, 1460-1536 (Margaret Spencer was daughter & co-heir to her father Sir Robert Spencer of Spencercombe)
Thomas Cary’s son Sir John Cary of Plashey 1491-1552, (3rd cousin to Henry VIII) married Joyce Denny1506-1559
Sir John Cary’s son Sir Edward Cary of Aldenham 1540-1618 married Catherine Knyvett 1543-1622
Sir Edward Cary’s son Sir Henry Cary PC, KB, 1575-1633, was created 1st Viscount of Falkland and 1st Lord Carye, married Elizabeth Tanfield 1585-1639
Sir Henry Cary, PC, KB, 1st Viscount of Falkland born circa. 1576, was M.P. for Hertfordshire circa. 1601-1622 , was made a Knight of the Bath on 3 Nov 1616 when Prince Charles was invested as Prince of Wales. On 10 Nov 1620, King James VI created Sir Henry Viscount of Falkland and Lord Carye in the Peerage of Scotland
Why Sir Henry was granted a Scottish Peerage and why his title was taken from one of the Royal Palaces of Scotland is not really clear, afterwards it seems to have been thought necessary to ratify the creation and at the same time, to issue letters of naturalization to the Viscount and his successors as Scottish subjects.
In 1622 due to the favor of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, Falkland was appointed Lord-Deputy of Ireland, proving himself a bigot and timid in carrying out policy, after enough complaints were lodged, he was removed finally in 1629. He remained however, in favor with King Charles, but then broke his leg in an accident and died in 1633.
The Viscounts have continued down to the present day. Currently with Lucius Edward William Plantagenet Cary as 15th Viscount of Falkland. The Viscount born in 1935 succeeded in 1984. Following the House of Lords Act of 1999 he was one of the 92 hereditary peers elected to remain. He married Caroline Anne Butler, daughter of Lt. Cmdr George Butler in 1962 and they had four children including the Hon. Lucius Alexander Plantagenet Cary, Master of Falkland born in 1963. He married secondly in 1990 to Nicole Mackey and they have issue.
