Arms blazon: Quarterly 1st and 4th Argent a lion rampant Azure, armed and langued Gules within a double tressure flory counterflory Azure ( for Lyon )
2nd and 3rd ermine three bows stringed palewise in fess Proper ( for Bowes)
These are the arms of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne and lately those of the 14th Earl through most of 1938.
Claude George Bowes-Lyon, the 14th Earl, was born on 14 Mar 1855. He married in 1881 Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck and proceeded to have ten children, the second last child, Lady Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon born on 4 Aug 1900 in London, but grew up at Glamis Castle, and married the Duke of York in 1923. When he became King George VI in 1936 Lady Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth. Later when King George died in 1952, she became Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and lived to the great age of 101 dying on 30 Mar 2002.
Claude Bowes-Lyon lived until 7 Nov 1944, dying at age 89.
