Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell

Arms: quarterly, 1st & 4th per fess Or and Argent a lion rampant guardant Gules between two tilting spears erect Proper ( Powell ); 2nd and 3rd Argent a lion rampant Proper, on the head a crown vallary Or, between four crosses patées Gules and as many fleurs-de-lys Azure alternately ( Baden).

Sir Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, 1st Bt. & 1st Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell, OM, GCMG, GCVO, KCB, DL was born 22 Feb 1857, educated at Charterhouse, served in the Army 1878-1910, mentioned in dispatches thrice, rising to the rank of Lt. Gen. He has the distinction of being the founder of the Boy Scouts in 1908 and Girl Guides in 1910 and was acclaimed Chief Scout in 1920. Created a Baronet in 1922 and as Lord Baden-Powell in 1929, he died on 8 Jan 1941 in Kenya peacefully at age 83. He married in 1912 Olave St. Clair, GBE, and have issue with the 3rd Baron living as we write. Olave, born 22 Feb 1889, was extremely active in the Scouting movement with him, receiving amongst other decorations, the White Rose of Finland in 1934, she died 25 June 1977. dqw 20091109
