Lt. Col. Robert Gayre of Gayre and Nigg, b. 6 Aug 1907 and d. 10 Feb 1996 was a an author and expert on Scottish heraldry. He wrote amongst other works: "Heraldic Standards and Other Ensigns", 1959; "The Nature of Arms", 1961; "Heraldic Cadency" 1961; and perhaps most importantly: "Roll of Scottish Arms", Part I in 2 volumes which cover all the entries of Volume 1 of Lyon Court's "Public Register of all Arms and Bearings in Scotland" covering the period 1672-1804 excluding the arms of corporations. This roll of arms by Gayre is more comprehensive than that of Lord Lyon Sir James Balfour Paul's "An Ordinary of Scottish Arms" ( Volume 1) of 1672-1901 ( 2nd Ed of 1903) in dealing with the same period. dqw 2011 0904
