SOURCES/NOTES & CREDITS: Illustration for background purposes and blazon
Burke’s Peerage 1970. Text adapted from same source plus “The Baronage of Scotland”
containing an Historical and Genealogical Account of the Gentry of that Kingdom by Sir
Robert Douglas of Glenbervie, BT, 1798 ( author of “The Peerage of Scotland”, 1764 ),
“Scottish Heraldry”, Mark D. Dennis, 1999 and internet sources.

About 20 years ago Mark D. Dennis, now Ross Herald Extraordinary, used the arms of Dame Maureen Daisy Helen Dunbar, 8th holder of the baronetcy of Dunbar of Hempriggs, to illustrate the arms of a Scottish baronetess. We thought it might be fun to show the late Baronetess’s arms one more time, after all, she was the only Nova Scotia baronetess, and for that matter, the only baronetess in the British Isles for 33 years !

Dame Maureen Daisy Helen Dunbar (formerly Moore), 8th Baronetess of Hempriggs Was born on 19 Aug 1906 and succeeded her kinsman on 4 Feb 1963, assuming the name of Dunbar and then submitted a petition to Lyon Court for recognition as the Baronetess of Hempriggs which was granted in Aug 1965 Dame Maureen died on 15 Feb 1997 and was succeeded by her son Sir Richard Francis Dunbar of Hempriggs, 9th and current Baronet.

Interestingly, Sir Richard’s heir just now is his elder daughter Emma Katherine Dunbar of Hempriggs, born in 1977, maybe there will be another Baronetess of Hempriggs one day.

This Nova Scotia baronetcy was created for the. Hon. Sir James Dunbar (formerly Sutherland ) on 10 or 21 Dec 1706, with remainder “to his heirs whomsoever”. Sir James was born circa 1680 as second son to James, 2nd Lord Duffus, he married in 1704 Elizabeth, only child and heiress to Sir William Dunbar, Bt of Hempriggs and relict of Sir Robert Gordon, 3rd Baronet of Gordontoun and assumed the name of Dunbar. He died in 1724 and was succeeded by his son, Sir William Dunbar, 2nd Bt.

Note: the title of baronetess is rare only four have existed in the UK, all Nova Scotia creations and none are currently living.

This was not the last Nova Scotia baronetcy created, but it was close, losing out to the Stewart of Tillicoultry baronetcy created on 29 April 1707 but, an interesting baronetcy for all that.
