Maclagan
Arms: Argent; two chevronels Sable, a bordure Vert charged with eight martlets Or.

Michael Maclagan, CVO, FSA, FRFistS, born on 14 April 1914 was the elder son of Sir Eric Robert Dalrymple Maclagan, KCVO, (1879-1951) who married Helen Elizabeth Lascelles (1879-1942. She was a granddaughter of the 4th Earl of Harewood, sister to Sir Alan “Tommy” Lascelles, Private Secretary to King George VI. Maclagan’s grandfather, was the Most Reverend William Dalrymple Maclagan, Archbishop of York from 1891 to 1908. This Archbishop crowned Queen Alexandra in 1902.

It is always fun to locate another Scots armiger, Michael’s father, Sir Eric matriculated arms at the Court of the Lord Lyon on the 30th of March 1935 and so as long as Sir Eric lived, Michael used his arms with a label Argent. See Sir Eric’s entry in Ordinary II, page 92, No.01349.

Michael Maclagan was the quintessential Oxford don for forty years. He was very much interested in heraldry and was appointed Slains Pursuivant by the Countess of Hay 1948-1970, then appointed Portcullis Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary, College of Arms,
England 1970-1980 and finally appointed Richmond Herald of Arms in Ordinary, College of Arms, England 1980-1989, and retired, age 75.

Michael had a younger brother, killed with the Rhodesian Air Force in 1942. Michael married twice and had four children.

He loved books as only a bibliophile can, building up an extensive collection of rare books.

Maclagan was twice married. His first marriage in 1939 to a cousin, Brenda Alexander, was dissolved by divorce in 1946. His second marriage in 1949 to Jean Elizabeth Brooksbank Garnett lasted almost 54 years; she died on 3 August 2003. He died ten days later on the day of her funeral. Maclagan had a son by his first marriage, and a son (who died, aged 26, in 1984) and two daughters by his second marriage.

Author with Juri Louda of the best-selling “Lines of Succession: Heraldry of the Royal Families of Europe” 1981 as wells as many other publications. He died on 13 Aug 2003, age 89.

The artwork is a rendering by John Hamilton Gaylor.
