Mar
Arms: Azure a bend between six Cross Crosslets fitchée Or.

The Earldom of Mar is one of the oldest earldoms in the Peerage of Scotland. The first Mormaer of Mar is usually regarded as Ruadri circa. 1131. From the middle of the thirteenth century the earls were recognizes among “The Seven Earls of Scotland”.

In the Earldom of Mar Restitution Act 1885 (48 & 49 Vict. ) the ancient Earldom was declared to be extant and that the Earldom held by Goodeve Erskine’s heirs was for precedence purposes given the creation date of 1404.

SOURCE, NOTES, & CREDITS: “The Scots Peerage” Sir James Balfour Paul, Vol. V, 1908, pp 566-639 and two Wikipedia articles. We are using Appendix A ( pp 156-158 ) “The Union Roll, 1707” found in the book “The Sixteen Peers of Scotland” by Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran, Bt. which indicates the Earl of Mar is the fifth senior Earl in the Peerage of Scotland.

However, with the attainder of the Earl Marischal in 1719, the precedence changed and we see in Appendix B ( pp 159-160 )The Union Roll of 1960 in “The Sixteen Peers of Scotland” that the Earl of Mar became the Fourth Senior Earl in the Peerage of Scotland.

The Current holder is Margaret Alison Lane, later of Mar, 31st Countess of Mar. Born in 1940, she is a Scottish hereditary peer, noblewoman and politician. Her parents were Millicent Mary Salton and James Clifton Lane, later James of Mar, 30th Earl of Mar. Lady Margaret succeeded in 1975. She has been married thrice: from her first marriage to Edwin Noel Article.

They have a daughter: Susan Helen of Mar, Mistress of Mar, the heiress presumptive. Lady Susan married Bruce Alexander Wyllie and they have two daughters: Isabel and Frances.

The countess married secondly John Salton and thirdly, is currently married to John Jenkin.

The artwork is a rendition by John Hamilton Gaylor.
