The 3rd Earl Mountbatten is a descendant of Queen Victoria, whose second daughter Princess Alice of the United Kingdom was his maternal great-great-grandmother. He is also a second cousin to Charles, Prince of Wales through his mother and Charles' father, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Philip is also his godfather and he in turn is a godfather of Philip's grandson, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.

The 3rd Earl Mountbatten was born in London as the eldest son of Patricia Knatchbull, 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma and John Knatchbull, 7th Baron Brabourne.

He was educated at the Dragon School, in Oxford and Gordonstoun School, Elgin, Moray, Scotland. He subsequently attended the University of Kent in southeast England.

He then followed his father into the British film industry in the 1970s, working as location manager on A Bridge Too Far and associate producer of Death on the Nile and the television serial Quatermass.

The 8th Baron Brabourne inherited the peerage of Earl Mountbatten of Burma upon the death of his mother, Patricia Knatchbull, 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma, on 13 Jun 2017. As consequence, the Barony of Brabourne, as well the Knatchbull Baronetcy, became subsidiary titles of the Earldom.

The fact of his being 8th Baron Brabourne since 2005, and the 3rd Earl Mountbatten of Burma since 2017 has special significance. Meaning that the Barony of Brabourne is held jointly by the current and future Earls Mountbatten of Burma descended only from male line of the 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma and her husband, the 7th Baron Brabourne. Should that male line become extinct, the titles will then separate or become extinct, depending on collateral male lines existing from previous holders of the titles.

The family seat is Broadlands, near Romsey, Hampshire.
