Cornwallis, Sir William
Arms: Sable gouttée d'eau on a fess Argent three Cornish chough proper,
A crescent Gules in chief for difference.

SOURCES, NOTES & CREDITS: The illustration for background, the blazon and the text is based on, and adapted from Wikipedia internet articles and C. S. Forester's "Hornblower and the Hotspur".

Hon. Sir William Cornwallis GCB, 1744-1819 Admiral of the Red and Commander in Chief of the Channel Fleet during the Napoleonic Wars…and a friend of Lord Nelson.

He was the younger brother of General Lord Cornwallis 1st Marquess and 2nd Earl, who is famous in the US for surrendering the British troops to General George Washington at Yorktown in 1781 which more or less ended the fighting and lead to the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

Sir William is mentioned several times in "Hornblower and the Hotspur" figuring in the text as Commander in Chief of the Channel Fleet during the days of the fight against Napoleon. We wonder how well the author captured Sir. William's character.

The artwork is an interpretation of John Hamilton Gaylor.
