Jon Meade,1st Earl of Clanwilliam was born 21 Apr 1744 in Ireland, educated at Trinity College, Dublin (BA), and was a Member of Paraliment for Banagher from 1764-1766. He was created Viscount Clanwilliam of County Tipperary and Baron Gillford in County Down, both titles in the Peerage of Ireland on 17 Nov 1766.

Jon Meade was then created as the 1st Earl of Clanwilliam in the Peerage of Ireland on 20 July 1776

He married on 29 Aug 1765 Theodosia, only daughter and heir to Robert Hawkins Magill of Gill Hall, County Down. They had two children, a son and a daughter. The son Richard, in time succeeded as the 2nd Earl.

The Earldom of Clanwilliam is extant yet today in the person of Patrick (Paddy) James Meade, 8th Earl of Clanwilliam born in 1960. He has an heir apparent in his son, John Onion Maximilian Meade, Lord Gillford born in 1998.

What is of interest here is that this title in the Peerage of Ireland seems to us to have a verra Scottish sound to it !

The artwork is an interpretation of John Hamilton Gaylor.
