The Earldom of Sutherland is one of the oldest earldoms in the Peerage of Scotland. The date of creation is circa. 1230 to William de Moravia, Knight, then as William of Sutherland until becoming Lord and Earl with a special remainder: to heirs general of the body of the grantee.

We are using Appendix A ( pp 156-158 ) “The Union Roll, 1707”found in the book “The Sixteen Peers of Scotland” by Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran, Bt. which indicates the Earl of Sutherland is the fourth senior Earl in the Peerage of Scotland.
However, after the attainder of the Earl Marishal in 1719 the Earl of Sutherland became the third senior Earl in the Peerage of Scotland (See Appendix B “The Union Roll, 1960 on page 159) of the “The Sixteen Peers of Scotland” by Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran, Bt.
Current holder is Alastair Charles St. Clair Sutherland, 25th Earl of Sutherland was born in 1947 is a Scottish nobleman He is chief of Clan Sutherland. The heir apparent is the son of the Earl, Alexander Charles Robert Sutherland, Lord Strathnaver born in 1981.
