HRH Dom Duarte Pio, Duke of Braganca, created him a hereditary knight (CHCRP = Cavaleiro Hereditario da Casa Real Portugesa de Braganca) by Letters Patent in 2015 for services to the Royal House of Portugal, an honor rarely conferred. In 2016, HRH awarded him the Banda (Grand Cross) of the Order of Merit of the Portuguese Royal House. HRH had conferred upon him the distinction of a Commander of the Order of Vila Vicosa in 2014. He also holds the Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael of the Wing (2011).
A friend of long standing, he is one of a group of friends who own lands on the Isle of Sanday in the Orkneys. The grant is reflective of his descent from the Boswells of Balmuto, Fife.
