On Monday, 7 April 2014, Elizabeth Ann Roads, LVO, OSt.J, FSA Scot, Snawdoun Herald, Lyon Clerk and Secretary of the Order of the Thistle, gave a presentation on the origin and development of the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland at the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society in New York City to a house packed to the rafters. Though we had corresponded over the years we had never met, so I was excited to see, meet and listen to Mrs. Roads speak. She made a PowerPoint presentation which was delightful, informative and humorous. She thoughtfully sprinkled the various reigns of Lyons with Letters Patent to Americans ( mainly colonists but also including a most recent set of Letters Patent signed by Lord Lyon Dr. Morrow). I would say more that half the audience were holders of honorary arms from the College of Arms in England and those of us who were Scottish armigers were amused at Mrs. Roads’ assumption and declaration of the pre-eminence of Scottish Armoury. Score one for the Lyon Office. After, we all enjoyed four, repeat four, different kinds of single malt Scotch with cheese & crackers.
