Arms: Azure three piles Argent on a chief Argent an Aesculapian rod
accompanied by two thistles slipped all Proper with in base a boar’s head
erased Argent.
SOURCE/NOTES & CREDITS: information and John Hamilton Gaylor for his assistance, specifically as to where I might find a readable scanned copy of the Letters Patent.
John Cochrane Henderson, Esquire of St. Andrews, Bowness on Windermere in the county of Westmoreland, England.
For Henderson’s personal information see his biographical entry.
He petitioned Lord Lyon Sir Francis James Grant, KCVO for arms which were granted on 20 Jan 1944 to him and other descendants of his father.
What is of interest here is first the date of the Letters Patent of 20 Jan 1944,
late in the reign of Lord Lyon Sir Francis J. Grant. Second, it is to be noted that there is no nobiliary clause in the grant. It would seem that the nobiliary clause was inaugurated in the reign of his successor Sir Thomas Innes of Learney, GCVO, as Lord Lyon from 1945 forward to 1969 and continued by his successors until the first half of 2008 when it was then discontinued by the then Lord Lyon David Sellar, MVO .
